First Time Filers T1

All my clients who are first time filers. When I try to E-File CRA give me error and transmission not going through. Does anyone else has this same issue? What is the solution?

Do you have authorization from them?

I filed a few first-timers, no problem. What error are you getting?

I had this happen twice this week - typing out their full middle name on the Info page in the middle initial space worked for me.

First thing, type the name as it appeared on their SIN document.

Are you checking the box on the Info screen that asks if the TP is filing for the first time in 2023?

This is what I had to do also. Full name as per SIN card.

This is a quick read and hopefully can help if you run into trouble. You need to answer Yes to the first-time filer question and enter the SIN exactly as it is on their document. Sometimes, this means there is no first name and instead the first and last name are in the last name field. Or in the the middle name field.

Thank you so much it really worked

I came here after running into this for the third time this year trying to efile returns for client’s kids for their first time. Would it not be better to paper file with the name as the client would be used to using rather than trying to match the SIN which seems to put them in a bizarre format? I’m thinking for future years would CRA’s records be set to whatever form the return is filed as (perhaps with no first name but a longer last name)?

We had a return where we filed the auth for a first time underage filer, got access to her online CRA account. Went to file the return, which matched what CRA had, and had it fail as it didn;t match what the SIN was. We finally got it to match the SIN and get efiled but then it changed the last name with the CRA so on the next return we have to mark off we’re changing the last name.

The funniest part? Neither the CRA nor the SIN match her last name so unless she calls CRA to change it herself, we have to do it on the next tax return.

Wish CRA et al would stop making our jobs harder.

@DMS
One issue is that most of us don’t WANT to paper file anything. It’s extra work. If we can find a way to file electronically, we will do that.

Oh I hear that. At least with first time filers there isn’t much to print typically. At least in my case it is young people not immigrants. But with @AlbertaEFileT confirming what I feared with it causing complications down the road I’m going to go the paper filing route.

I hope CRA figures a solution though. I charge next to nothing to do kids returns for clients and now they’re going to be an extra hassle.

What a pain!

If you choose to go this route, be mindful of your paper filing limit and the penalties involved for going over it.

has any one faced this issue when client’s names are not matching and not able to get access to client’s CRA and can’t perform AFR. Does such cases will be counted in ceiling of 5 paper file returns. These thing happened mostly in the cases of clientsf who are filing first time .

AFR is not a necessity to file a tax return, it is a tool to help make our lives easier. Client should be able to provide you with govt documentation to give you their correct name.

Efile help desk is helpful in my experiences on these mattera of name IF I have some form of official documentation so that I have a clue as to what we might be looking at.

If the e-filing is rejected due to names not matching then you have no choice but to paper file. We have yet to be fined for it but with this year, who knows.TaxCycle support advised us to paper file when we couldn’t get a first time filer name to match what the CRA had and it rejected the filing.

Yeah, I’m already at 4/5 for paper filing as I did another one today and only through 25% of my expected volume so will certainly be going over the limit. But in all instances there will be an attempt to file electronically first so I wouldn’t expect them to issue a fine. But then again it is CRA so… …

Exactly what we said. It’s the CRA so logic is completely out the damn window.

One of these days we’ll have to do a thread with the stupidest things CRA has ever said to us or done to a client.

If I do a client’s child for the first time and they only have a T4 I don’t worry about using AFR, however, if they’re a university student I always try to use AFR because they almost always have slips on their CRA account, say T4As, they didn’t provide. And often I’m waiting several days for the student to obtain and provide their T2202. But it seems like it going to be an issue as I imagine people are running into the same issues trying to submit the AuthRep form for first time filers. I haven’t tried to submit one yet not certain.
