Document Control Number

Here is a quick observational comment on the T183 Document Control Number (DCN).

I was about to e-file a tax return today and noticed that the T183 DCN was suddenly missing on the T183 form in TaxCycle whereas it was clearly visible on the e-signed T183 pdf that my client e-signed. What happened to the DCN number in TaxCycle? How do I restore it before e-filing the tax return?

I phoned TaxCycle support and they didn’t have an explanation for why the DCN would suddenly go missing. Nor could they guarantee they would find a way to restore it if they hunted through my computer to see what happened. The easiest fix was to recreate the file and have my client sign a new T183 form. Or so we thought. …

I did another carry-forward of my client’s 2023 file and immediately noticed that the DCN was missing on this blank 2024 file. This prompted me to open a 2024 return that I was currently working on that had not yet been printed. I took note that it too did not have a DCN on the T183 (I had previously thought the number was autogenerated as soon as the return was created?).

I re-opened the return that I wanted to e-file with the signed T183 and re-printed the T183 to see what would happen. Voila, the DCN reappeared on both the printed T183 and on TaxCycle, and it matched the DCN on my client’s signed T183 form, thus allowing me to e-file her return without recreating the return and having her sign a new form.

Thought I’d share this insight in case anyone else runs into this problem of a disappearing DCN number. Reprinting the T183 form seems to restore the DCN back to its original number. Who knew! Clearly TaxCycle support did not know this trick.
