ONBEN - Diagnostic Warning for Box 6113

A single person 64 years of age or older, with Net Income under $50,000 that has an amount in Box 6112 (Property Taxes Paid), should have a check mark in box 6113 to apply for the Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant (OSHPTG). In addition, a married or common-law couple with one spouse 64 years of age or older, with a combined Net Income under $60,000 that has an amount in Box 6112 of the ONBEN form should also have a check mark in box 6113 to apply for the OSHPTG. Rent does not qualify for the credit, only Property Taxes paid.

It would be fairly straight forward for the software to calculate whether an individual or a couple qualify for the OSHPTG and either automatically put a check mark into box 6113 or issue a yellow diagnostic warning on that field to prompt the user to tick the box. If you don’t tick the box the client quite simply does not get the credit.

I know this only affects Ontario Seniors, but I feel this would be a good idea for next year’s program.

It currently gives me the diagnostic warning in this case.

That is very interesting Arliss… I think I figured out my problem after reading your post.

Box 6113 won’t turn yellow until you go up to the top of the form and check box 6118.

I normally enter the property taxes as my first step then check box 6113 as I’m heading back up to the top of the form. I see that if you check off box 6118 first then it works. It’s funny, I have done about 45 of these and in almost every case, as I’m checking off box 6113, I think to myself there should be a diagnostic warning on this field. Little did I know that if I forgot to check box 6113 I would eventually get a diagnostic warning.

Thanks Arliss!
