A single person 64 years of age or older, with Net Income under $50,000 that has an amount in Box 6112 (Property Taxes Paid), should have a check mark in box 6113 to apply for the Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant (OSHPTG). In addition, a married or common-law couple with one spouse 64 years of age or older, with a combined Net Income under $60,000 that has an amount in Box 6112 of the ONBEN form should also have a check mark in box 6113 to apply for the OSHPTG. Rent does not qualify for the credit, only Property Taxes paid.
It would be fairly straight forward for the software to calculate whether an individual or a couple qualify for the OSHPTG and either automatically put a check mark into box 6113 or issue a yellow diagnostic warning on that field to prompt the user to tick the box. If you don’t tick the box the client quite simply does not get the credit.
I know this only affects Ontario Seniors, but I feel this would be a good idea for next year’s program.
