Newcomer student with SIN starting with "9" - T1 paper filing with CRA?

Hi All,

I have client who is newcomer student with SIN starting with “9” .
All what he has is T2202 and T4A. He didn’t yet open CRA account.

Do you recommend that I efile his T1 or print and give it to him to mail the paper return to CRA.

Thanks

You first have to establish their tax residency.
Have they provided you with copies of ther foreign tax return for 2020?
Tax treaty issues?
Immigration documentation?
Family documentation?
Tax tesidency may not have yet changed.

Canada gives either a temporary “visitor’s with right to or no to work visa” If your client has been given a permanent resident, then there’s no problem

“If your client has been given a permanent resident, then there’s no problem”
.

Apparently you are under the mistaken impression that
“Permanent resident” = “Tax resident”

(or that “Canadian CItizen” = “Tax resident”)

That is, of course, incorrect.

Of course you are correct, but you’ll have to admit that permanent resident narrows down the scope of problems

Once they receive their PR they receive a new SIN, therefore if starts with a 9 - not a Permanent Resident, but as mentioned prior, not the only factors involved in determining residency status for tax purposes.
