2024 xml file

Can’t get T4s filed through Taxcycle as I don’t have a WAC for the majority of my clients this year (most are no longer valid). I’m trying to locate the xml file saved on my laptop to upload through RAC however I am unable to locate the location that Taxcycle is saying that it is saving them in. I went into settings to change the location (files and folders/common folders/share data monitors, favourites and tab settings) (this was the only one with the same location that the xml was being saved to). However, the xml file is still going to the location I can’t find so I think there must be a different place to change this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The XML file is in a temporary location and is only available when the filing window is open. It is added to the AppData folder once you start the transmission process in TaxCycle. Windows automatically deletes the file if you cancel the transmission attempt.

The easiest way to deal with this is to open filing window and leave it open. Then, copy the path to the file, making sure to remove.xml file name from the end of the path before pasting it into Windows explorer.

Detailed instructions for this are here: XML File Location - TaxCycle

Also, if you use RAC, remember to put your RepID on the Engagement worksheet.

And if you can’t see the AppData folder in Windows Explorer, you might need to choose to Show hidden items.

As an interesting FYI, Sage released an “XML updater” that removes the client as the bn15 (among other things) and substitutes mine. They go through fine under my long-standing RZ/WAC combo. No need for the client to have a WAC.

I can’t get a WAC for my business as I have no payroll account. It would definately make things simpler.

I’ve had a WAC since long before I had a payroll account - set up for filing T5s (RZ account). And before that, when I operated as a proprietorship, for filing…something? I can’t remember what, but it wasn’t a payroll account.

You don’t need an RP account to get a WAC. You get an RZ.

I set up a payroll account just for this purpose (I’m a sole prop, no staff). The Biz Enquiries agent I spoke with understood the situation, now I can just file them through TC - much simpler than current RAC!

I didn’t know that you could do that. Definitely going to look into!
Thanks

The agent i spoke to wouldn’t let me, on the basis that this was not a permitted reason for it.

Sent me this link, but it doesn’t actually help for giving a reason against obtaining a WAC. Last year i just used my 9 digit BN and a WAC, but no longer permitted…

I really hate how hit or miss the CRA still is. You could roll the dice again with another call (if you have time for it )??

I’m thinking I might hire a subcontractor at some point in 2025. So … perhaps I could legitimately open a T4A payroll account, on the off-chance I do…?

Hmmm. That is a potential solution.

I agree!
In my case I figured: now that I have a payroll account anyway, I could issue a T4 to any family members who help me out rather than reporting as biz or on line 104 for them…

Just so everyone is aware… you’ll want distinct RP accounts for each kind of reporting. These are the most common:

  • T4A - so CRA aren’t expecting withholding remittances and sending you notices
  • T4A where remittances may be due
  • T4 for regular payroll
  • T4 for any reduced EI

Lesson being… ideally don’t hire someone with T4A expected and yet file under regular T4 RP account…

CRA just confirmed that this is not permitted under any circumstances as a reason for opening a payroll account… you must be about to hire someone and have an estimated start date etc…

So, do like many of us and open an RZ account. That worked for me for several years, while I was practicing as a sole prop.

Still does work. RZ is specifically for slip filing. Presumably CRA doesn’t want a bunch of inactive and non-paying RP accounts hanging around.
