Why are T5's so Late?

I understand the capital gains boondoggle slowed the preparation of T3’s. I don’t see why T5 slips are still not on CRA’s system and can’t be accessed with AFR. I just reviewed a return with ONE T5 from RBC. I looked at last year. We did an AFR on March 3 and the 2023 T5 downloaded from CRA. It’s March 20th and still no sign of the 2024 T5. This is the same for pretty much every client.

A lot of the T5’s have capital gains on them too so they are also not up probably for the same reason as the T3’s. My clients also are missing a lot but many of them have the slips so I get scanned copies from them but not on the website yet. Something is slowing down processing all the slips that have been filed as the T5’s were all due 2 weeks ago and the banks etc would not have been late.

I realize some T5’s, but a very small % of them, have capital gains. There will be an awful lot of amended returns filed after April 30. And if you wait for the matching dept to assess the missed T3’s/T5’s, you risk the penalty for not including the income. I hope JT understands the screw-up he’s caused.

I assume it is related to CRA’s change to slip filing - making it more difficult for anyone who used to file slips without a WAC? Unless that only applied to T4 filing? I’ve always used software with a WAC to file slips, so I don’t remember if T5 filing looked/worked any different than before.

I understand your frustration. I do everything on the return that I can making a note for AFR and put the file as pending. Most people don’t expect returns to be done until early April at the earliest.

Besides I rarely trust that a client will provided ALL their slips. I have seen so many instances of clients forgetting one or more slips so as a general rule of thumb I don’t like to file until well into April to ensure all slips are on file with the CRA so I can catch slips the client misses.

It is not only T3 & T5’s that are not available via AFR. I have clients that work for large companies and there T4 is not there.

Just blame it on Trump. LOL

The incompetent liberal government of the last 9 years gets no blame? The same people that caused this tax mess are still in Carney’s cabinet fyi

RIFs missing too

Same general result here…even some T4s/T5s that I filed…aren’t up on AFR. Just more of the same crap from CRA…but the problem is there is no effective complaint mechanism other than filing “Service Complaints”. Maybe we should just flood them with those and eventually the point will get across? Or phone Bob WK Hamilton’s Exec Sec (sorry…but you’re on the firing line…) and flood his office with complaints.

EFAC is aware of the issue and has contacted CRA, with little current effect. Don’t know about the various CPA and other associations.

What a &*%$ show.

And if you believe the polls, these clowns will get re-elected…

If you believe elected officials have anything to do with matters of this technical nature, I don’t know what to tell you.

Well, at least ONE elected official is the Minister of National Revenue and she DOES has something to do with matters of this technical nature: namely the complete and utter incompetence of Bob Hamilton’s Executive Branch…because she’s responsible for his tenure. (To be realistic, it was probably the ex-social worker who appointed him.) Nonetheless…it’s her ministry.

Brière’s been in office for three months. Laying this at her feet is very silly. And so is denigrating social workers, for that matter. Not that any social worker was involved in appointing Hamilton, as far as I’m aware.

In any event, I’m done with the non-technical portion of this discussion.

Edit: thought I’d add..I really don’t want to be argumentative, but the state of CRA and the fact that it ALL gets dumped on US really, really, really grinds my gears.

Iain, in the past, if a minister failed in his duty (and his department is his duty), he would do the honourable thing and resign his ministry. The minister responsible for the Canada Revenue Agency (believe it is called that) is actually responsible. It is a cowardly thing to blame it on the bureaucrats… While he does not do the actual work, he sets the direction and makes sure the department is appropriately staffed. (masculine implies feminine)

Please remember that my comments were in response to “these clowns will get re-elected”, phrasing which makes it difficult to take your other comments at face value. The idea that a minister should resign their position for any failure is silly, and coupled with the “clowns” comment suggests a pervasive bias.

I do see a lot of complaining on these boards, which IMO greatly overstates their impact and generally ignore the massive improvements that CRA has made to its online services in recent years. When I look at the processes for preparing T1s now as compared to say 2010, it’s vastly better now.

The way I explain it to my clients

For years we had to input everything and trust our clients had it all.

In the last few years, with technology advances, we have vastly improved the data entry errors due to download availability of slips and have been able to double check clients have not forgotten anything.

This year, we have reverted back to the old way… at least for the early filers.

Hopefully the computer issues will be resolved soon and we will back to the fabulous technology.

All those improvements were before Covid. Since covid, all the CRA services, and also especially the electronic services have been on a steady decline. I admit, some because of outside ‘bad actors’, affecting CRA security measures. However, a large number are because of bad service, and do not make any sense, but they make life much more difficult for accountants and tax preparers.
As to my ‘clowns’ comment, how would you describe the situations we have been through, which all have their root cause in Parliament, through actions of the Liberal goverment:

  1. the UHT debacle
  2. the bare trust fiasco
  3. the capital gains circus
    A three ring circus indeed.
