I recently completed my contract with CRA, where I served as a Call Center Agent on the Business Enquiry Line for nearly two years. During this time, I assisted the taxpayers on various topics including GST, Payroll, and Income Tax, utilizing knowledge from the Excise Taxation Act and other relevant legislation.
Regarding my educational background, I hold a college diploma in a non-accounting field. However, I have also completed beginner and intermediate Accounting courses at a community college here in Canada.
I’m now looking to leverage my experience and skills in exploring new job opportunities. I would greatly appreciate any advice or insights on potential roles that align with my background and expertise.
Get fundamental tax behind you and see about potentially taking a junior role in a smaller public accounting firm. The fact that you worked at the CRA, and given your exposure to the various practicalities of the trade, I would say you have a good shot at working into a more senior role shortly down the road. Your resume has longevity, utilize that.
I agree with @Deepinthemoneycall. Your CRA experience, with a sound tax understanding, would make you a good find for a firm, either small or large. You would need to work with a firm approved for training if you wished to obtain your CPA in the future.
Agreed - I turned a multi-year stint at CRA in PubInfo, Audit and (mostly) Appeals into a 40+ year career, mostly on my own. You are a good candidate to do the same, primarily because you’ve seen the inconsistencies, problems, variables and just generally weird crap that shows up…and how to deal with each in turn. This is valuable to others.
Develop your accounting skills (whether or not you get a CPA) and you can be an effective tax practitioner at the stress level you choose.
