Authorization via NOA

I’m curious to know what others have experienced when attempting to generate the authorization form for new clients to sign by generating a form using information from a Notice of Assessment. This is the first time trying that method this tax season and I was surprised CRA wanted information from the 2023 Notice of Assessment. I had requested the clients provide their most recent NOA which were from 2024. One NOA was issued in Feb 2026 as the person only recently filed their 2024 return so I understand it in that situation. In the other two examples their NOAs were dated early June 2025.

Does CRA always request information from the 2023 NOA or if clients filed in March/April last year do I need their 2024 NOA? Trying to get a better idea of which year to have my client’s provide moving forward.

Thanks

Notice has to be at least 6 months old

Yeah, I saw that mentioned but was surprised I wasn’t asked for the 2024 figures for the 2024 NOAs that were dated June 2025 as those are 8+ months old. So curious what others are experiencing.

Recent reassessments of the last year filed seem to require the previous year information I have discovered.

I had this issue also. It was on a late filer, so the returns were well over 6 months. The Last NOA was 2020, but CRA wanted info from 2019.

I am in the habit of checking CRA first to see what year I will need.

I’ve just been avoiding it altogether by making them authorize me themselves on MyAccount. It takes no time at all. Profile page, scroll down, enter the group number, level 2, no expiration.

If they don’t have it, I tell them to get their last return and set it up. That also takes almost no time. I have a 40yo friend who can only be described as technologically cursed try it so I could understand how difficult it would be for people who need help with their own cell phones sometimes. He said it took him less than 10 minutes.

Its not that easy. Sometime, CRA asks information form 2023 NOA instead of 2024. Even if 2024 is filed.

I just did two authorization requests that asked for 2021 tax info. - and the clients were up to date on filing.
So embarrassing to ask a client for 2024 info. then find out the CRA wants their 2021 - Infuriating

We have completed dozens of new authorizations; most successful with 2024 NOA; occasionally CRA asking for an older year: seems if more recent year(s) has NORA, CRA wants the most recent NOA without any NORA; agreed a bit of a pain to go back to client and ask for an older NOA.
