Here we are with a few days left and I can’t believe the amount of information missing from the AFR this year.
T4-RIFs, T5s, even T4s are missing (I checked for my wives and daughters T4’s from Home Depot today and they were not available). Disappointing. AFR has been around for awhile, it should be getting better (especially since nearly all forms are now submitted electronically) but it seems to be getting worse.
I wish I knew. I have a couple of clients who work at the same Home Depot (they’re related), and one of their T4’s came in fine through AFR, the other wasn’t there, so I had to manually enter it. AFR is a mess this year!
guess the advantage this tax season is plainly to the seasoned preparer who has experience before AFR existed… Have also found Doxcycle has been a real help in this
Hopefully the use of the word “feature” was sarcastic…
As far as I know there are only a few avenues of complaint of any use:
the mass media, especially if you know someone who has a significant audience. I’ve written personally to both Harvey Cashore (CBC) and Kim Moody (Globe) about the crap this year. Harvey has done a LOT of investigative work on CRA.
Your MP, once one is elected
The Minister of Revenue, once one is appointed
Bob WK Hamilton (Bob.Hamilton@cra-arc.gc.ca) who is the Commissioner of the CRA, (613) 957-3688
What I’ve really found helpful are the Excel import templates. I’ve created T3 and T5013 templates with just the common box #'s. When I have a number of these slips to enter for a client, I open up a new copy of the saved template, plug in the box numbers, save and import. Works great, although having a reliable AFR would be much more helpful but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards.
I agree this year Doxcycle has been my go to like in years when we didn’t have it. I’ve reverted back to all slips in Doxcycle then posted to taxcycle then do auto file and see what’s matched up. The problem I’m having this year is how many clients discard their tax slips and expect it will be on the CRA system already. Right now I have 5 clients who don’t know were their slips are and have to ask for them to be resent by whatever company issued them and then wonder why the returns maybe late.
@kevin – Great tip to create Excel slips templates wtih common box#'s to save data entry time.
@nevans – Interesting tip to use Doxcycle for slips matching with AFR. I had abandoned Doxcycle after a couple of frustrating years for all receipts. I will adopt for slips entry.
@smallBizGuy – Love your suggestion for CRA feedback. Add CRA ombudsman to the list.
A big frown to CRA
That is an interesting suggestion. I only used DoxCycle in my first year that I am with TaxCycle. [2017 tax year].
I really didn’t like everything being in one PDF. I got corrupted PDF’s and then lost all my information for the client.
It would be nice if it could generate separate PDF’s per category.
Thanks for sharing that. It sounds like a really good setup. I haven’t used Excel imports in TaxCycle yet, so it’s great to hear about it. You’re doing a great job with this! I believe there are others here like me who would be interested to hear a bit about how you do it.
Ah - good thought on the Ombud (although interestingly he’s a political appointee with absolutely NO background in tax…wonder how they manage that!?).
I’m mad enough this year that I’d consider a Class Action even though it has ZERO chance of success, just to point out what it cost us in time, effort and stress…for the third year in a row, mostly for no reason whatsoever, other than CRA’s utter incompetence.
Not only the T4s, the worst one are the T2202 slips. Majority of the T2202 slips are not showing up on RepAClient. So now I have to manually select no to Canada Workers Benefit, but I also have to make sure that the student loans and grants aren’t considered as taxable income for full time students.
I have to refile those returns before July, otherwise come August, the CRA system would reclassify those grants/loans as income! This whole sh*t show is costing us the accountants/tax preps time and money that could be used elsewhere. I am in a desperate need for vacation.
Joke’s on us! As of today all kinds of slips are showing up…T4As, T4 RIFS, T5s, T3s…
Of course. A day late and a dollar short…that’s our CRA!
EDIT / NOTE: Just downloaded some unreported T5s for a client, and rather than the “grid” printout as appears onscreen the ACTUAL T5 slip is available from CRA. Surprised.
I just had a heavy tax season .. also just had a bunch of very miniscule reassessments from bank T5’s that got posted on May 5th. Phone has been ringing off the hook.. such a waste of time tbh.
I’ve had a few – larger though. No T3s showing yet online for some clients (including an Alter Ego Trust filed on Mar 31 as was done and complete – Trust doesn’t show as Filed on RAC nor are the slips showing up on recipients).
