Real estate or real property - which ever one provides the most clarity (probably the former).
My goal here is to have the client proactively tell me that something was sold. How it is handled can then be discussed. I truly dislike having to amend a return because they did not clearly understand what is encompassed by the question.
Isn’t having it on the template more than sufficient for all professional tax advisor?
Or do you guys just want to have it, so when it comes to practice review, it’s not going to be a problem? Or have the clients to read it and expect them to understand it?
I still go over the T1135 and disposition of principal residence, even though those were specifically noted on the engagement letter already.
Also, I always want to see the purchase and sale price on the contract, not from what they tell me
@Elizabeth I was looking as editing the my post-season template (2020).
This is for a Manitoba resident, and from the code I think Rent or property tax should show up in the list, but it is not. Is something off with the code, or am I misunderstanding? I’ve highlighted the code in the default template and as you can see in the bottom preview there is no “Rent or…” in the list.
FYI - the pre-season letter looks right, but I prefer to use the post-season letter from the past filed returns instead of carrying forward all the returns in a batch.
@grangers2016 We’re applying the changes in this thread to the 2020 post-season letter and the 2021 pre and post-season letters. That way you’ll be able to use them too.
@grangers2016 I looked at the current post season letters and those conditions work fine. The rent or property taxes displays based on a person being a resident of Manitoba and have either rent paid or school taxes paid for their principal residence
in these fields on the MB479:
@Elizabeth Am I missing something? I only see this checklist in the Post Season Letter, not the Pre-Season letter. I don’t want to go back to 2020 files because those files are locked. And at the bottom of the 2021 checklist (that I can only find in 2020’s file), it says “Slips From the Following Issuers (if applicable to 2020)”. I really like the look of the new checklist but is it available in the 2021 module for the 2021 tax year?
UPDATE: OK I just realized the reason I can’t see it is because I had previously edited the template. How do I restore the built-in Taxcycle template?
Just open the letter in the template editor and then delete any of the additional copies of it. So right-click and then selected delete (like in this screen capture). Once you have removed the additional copies, it will stop replacing the built-in letter:
@Elizabeth I’m working on 2020 PostSeason letters for 2021.
the years are off in the the PostSeasonDocs .
It is referring to 2019 instead of 2021 as follows:
❑ Notice(s) of (re)assessment for 2019, and
Slips From the Following Issuers (if applicable to 2020)
If you do the carry forward to 2021 and use the Pre-season Letters, the dates are now accurate. I usually don’t carry forward a return until the client actually contacts me, so that’s where you have to decide if you want to save that carry forwarded file or not (or save it in a different directory).
I’ve never sent out the pre or post letters to my clients and was thinking about doing it this year, but the TaxCycle letter in its current form seems too verbose. I showed it to a couple of my clients asking if they thought it would be helpful and they had mixed emotions, with some finding the terminology confusing (it don’t apply to their situation and thus had no prior exposure to the terminology). I think I would need to customize it to simply identify which tax slips they had last year, and then tweak which parts of the letter would be applicable to include for each specific client.
I agree that there’s a lot in those letters. I’m always on the fence about the Foreign reporting section and I think most of my clients gloss over that one. I’m thinking of pulling it out this year and adding a simple “Do you have … over $100,000?” question.
One thing that I changed this year was to make the checklist and the source documents a snippet. Look for the code in the letter that says {{> Checklist }} and {{> PostSeasonDocs }}
Just use this code to insert either of those portions into a separate letter without changing our default coding (which is quite complex).
It makes me think that we could pull the foreign reporting section out into a snippet too, so it becomes a matter of a small piece of code to choose which snippets you.
The fillable aspect was one of my concerns too, Tiffany. I was trying to think of a way to make it fillable on my end, but quickly vetoed that thought as it would be a pain to do it for each individual client I’m sending this letter too. I also don’t think TaxCycle’s template editor is designed to produce fillable PDF’s. I might need a different engine addon to add this functionality.
Absolutely, this is something that we are looking at adding in TaxFolder for the 2022 tax year. The proposed new feature would allow you to send a default or customized pre-season checklist from within TaxFolder that your clients complete after logging into their TaxFolder client portal.
I believe you also asked about a link to TaxFolder for the checklist. In any template you can add a direct link to the login for TaxFolder by adding text (ie Sign in to TaxFolder). Select the text and right click to add the hyperlink information.
If you would like to add a logo with a sign in link to your regular emails and/or website, please contact support and we will send you the suggested HTML code.
