I understand a child over 18 (not disabled/perfectly healthy) is not considered depdendent. To optimize if both parents and child files are done together as family i have to pick the 18 year old child as Dependent in Tax Cycle for T1 preparation. Am I doing anything wrong?
Not sure what you mean by “…have to pick the…child as dependant…” but:
- The child can be considered a dependant up to age 25 if in post-secondary schooling - that is, for the purpose of residency (i.e. going to school in a different province).
- If the child is in post-secondary school, and is included in the “family file” (i.e. no separate T1 file for the child), TaxCycle will automatically calculate the tuition transfers, etc.
- If the child’s address is still the same as the parents’ address, there is no need to separate the child’s file from the parents’ file. Based on the age, TaxCycle won’t calculate dependant credits, etc.
- You can create and file a full T1 for the child within the “family file” in TaxCycle.
So, basically - no, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Thanks a lot Nezzer. Appreciate.
