I run a Non Profit organization that receives funding from Canadian government agencies. We pay HST to various contractors for execution of services. However we do not collect HST as we get funding grants. Should we file and claim HST rebates?
All the NPOs are supposed to claim that, and its available on all of your HST’d expenses.
It’s not that simple. You need to contact someone that will look at all the factors involved. I do some work for a very small NPO - they pay HST same as anyone who does not have an exemption. Depending on what the NPO does, it may qualify for a Public Service Body rebate for some of the taxes paid. Depending on what services the NPO provides, some services may be taxable and some not. It can be complicated until you know the rules for your type of organization. The cost for doing things incorrectly may well out weigh the cost of getting the help to make sure you are doing things correctly.

An Alberta education charity had a private K-Grade 12, (I think a 66% rebate), post-secondary program, (I think 67%) and a bookstore (50% rebate).
