New Auth rep effective July 15

Looking for an answer in plain english..not CRA long winded technical explanation

When I have the typical client who shows up.. hasn’t filed for this year, last year .. perhaps more and wants my help.
Let’s assume I will not have access to a recent NOA as they are that far behind or lost any they have ever received.

For my scenario, lets say that attempting to obtain My account is much too complex for them…as they honestly do not have the patience to set it up…

How do we obtain access? I am honestly lost.

thanks

I think the answer is you simply DON’T get access. You have to file their taxes based on whatever paperwork they give you (just like we did 30 years ago), or you tell them to go away, because you don’t want the hassle of dealing with someone who can’t be bothered to keep their taxes up-to-date (which would make it possible for you to get access).

That is where I was headed.. it is going to be very painful going forward.. ugh

That’s the perfect answer!
Why should I care more than they care?

One other issue I see is for first time filers - I am guessing no access on the first year period?

If this is personal taxes, I’m not sure what all the grumbling is about. I’ve done a few like this. I start with getting a current year Authorization form completed and filed. Once you have access to their CRA account online, see what returns are missing and proceed from there. Does it take time? Yes, but it’s all billable. Or am I missing something?

You are missing something.

They are changing “how” we get to have the authrep submitted to CRA for individuals.

It will no longer be available to be submitted thru the tax software.

It will require the taxpayer to have a My Account or be up to date and have their NOA.

I feel you have missed the point.

Perhaps all this work is billable where you live but I don’t think in rural NB I am going to find many clients willing to pay me to sit their while they think of passwords and look at me as if I have three heads… use “my phone and take pictures to get instant access to

CRA” Just went through this was a New Biz … Hateful at best

Being a first time filer, there wouldn’t be anything to access so, authorization not required.

At least not until CRA decides to mess up the return and you then need to amend something. Of course, a NOA should have been issued at that point and one would hope the client has access to MyAccount to access said NOA (not likely, but one can hope).

Okay, thanks for the update.

I disagree… I currently use the Rep A client on first time filers to access copies of T4s.. or to verify what they provided as they may have forgotten one, University slips, etc… (This year being the exception as majority of the data was not available)

Not all first time filers have 1 T4.

And what is to be done for all those filers who WILL NOT set up My Account? Just refuse to help them?

As I said above:

I am wondering the same???

The whole online thing is absolutely insane.

I live in rural NB.

Our internet is not reliable or fast or cheap. I expect most of rural Canada is the same.

I think forcing this roll out of Online services is extremely unfair.

Until we have reliable, fast and cheap internet AND taxpayers have enjoyed it for years and learn to trust it.. how can they be expected to use it? It is ridiculous to assume everyone will want to be online or have the knowledge or the capabilities.

My 2 cents//

Yup. I have older clients who will never use it. They don’t have internet because they don’t see a need for it. And why would they spend the extra money if everything in their lifestyles is fine without it? I can’t imagine wanting to spend and extra $75 a month just to access CRA, if I were in their position.
