So, this is fun. I have had the son of a client contact us to catch him up. He hasn’t filed since 2010!
I have his copy of the 2010 return (if you can call the summaries they printed out copies of the return), but I don’t think it’s actually useful. He doesn’t have and can’t get CRA My Account access because he doesn’t have a recent return.
Could I just e-file the 2024 return with the signed T183 or would I have to paper file it?
Once we have the 2024 NOA, then I can help him get My Account set up and authorize us. From there, I correct 2024 if needed and do 2015-2023. He’ll be SOL on the 2011-2014 refunds he would have gotten because they are more than 10 years ago.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that would be more direct?
That is what I was thinking. Yesterday I had a client for which I had to file 2022 to current. His address that CRA has is wrong, and he has no notices of assessments at all. Luckily I do the T4’s for the company he worked for. I will e-file his returns once I get his rent today. I don’t expect any problems with e-file. If I don’t forget I will let the forum know if I had any problems.
I will just insisted that once he gets his Notice of Assessment he better come in to give me access.
i think it might have been on this site, or perhaps I read it elsewhere, there is a (new?) process for a taxpayer who is unable to get a cra account and has no recent NOAs, whereby a representative can get access via signed authorization form
Thanks all, I e-filed 2024. The only thing they wouldn’t allow was the $250 training amount. I’ll have to adjust for that after the dust settles on the other returns and CRA can see that he is entitled to it.
I can see where doing it this way could become a situation where people procrastinate getting back to me to deal with authorization, so I won’t do the rest of them until I get RAC access.
I had him sign an authorization to represent, but are these documents even going to be necessary now with clients having to actively verify authorization or add us themselves on My Account?
Unless next year becomes the $#!+show 2024 was, I might do a My Account tutorial with every client I can when we finalize returns and have them check their authorizations and direct deposit information. CRA is obviously forcing everyone on it. They should know what’s there and how to use it. If some of them figure out how easy their returns are, that just frees up time for the people who actually need my help.
I’m trying to add a client Rep A Client, however after the taxpayer information where I click on submit, the screen shows loading then doesn’t show the next step. Luckily I was able to get the client to authorize me through their account but this looks like an unnecessary headache that will be exacerbated during tax season.
Better in the sense of more secure, yes. Not better in the sense of making it easier for tax preparers specifically. Which frankly makes sense given that tax preparation is not a regulated industry.
Use Represent a Client to get the access in to CRA. Then call and explain that they are way behind so can’t get a My Account. Agent goes through the process with the client, gets them in and the client then approves your access request.
Just did this yesterday and we were done in 10 minutes (after getting to an actual human - he used call back request and came to my office when he didn’t pick up on the first call - you have 15 minutes before they call again)
