Hi,
Can we claim child taekondow fees in our tax return?
The federal fitness credit died under Trudeau.
The federal fitness credit was discontinued years ago. Several provinces still have a provincial credit, so there may be a credit available depending on where the taxpayer lives.
In some circumstances, fees such as this can qualify as child care costs. They generally do not qualify, but in some cases they can.
In NS, there’s a provincial credit maxed at $500. Times the provincial credit raie of 8.79% yields $43.95 per eligible child. So, if you pay $3,000 for dance lessons for one child, you get enough to take your family to McDonald’s once with enough left over for an ice capp at Tim’s.
If it’s weekly lessons, no. If it’s primarily for the purpose of child-minding, like summer half and full day camps, yes.
Those are 2 different things. One is the Child Fitness Credit, the other is Child Care. The Child Fitness Credit is hardly worth the effort. If you have to first explain it to your client, then pick their brain for the details, it’s not worth it.
Fees paid for child fitness activities can qualify as child care, in certain circumstances. The portion if any that qualifies as child care generally cannot be claimed as a fitness tax credit.
