Amounts changed less than 300

What is this message exactly mean “T183 Amounts have changed by less than $300, this is acceptable to CRA. Print T183.”
Does this mean that the client does not need to sign the T183? Can we file his/her T1adj with them to have him/her sign the updated T183?
If not, then why it’s saying that “this is acceptable to CRA”?

Supposedly if the refund or balance owing changes by less than $300 then you do not need the client to sign an updated T183.

It’s on the back of the T183 form (attached).

If a T1 Adjustment changes the balance by less than $300, you do not need to get a new T183 signed before filing. If it’s more than that, a new T183 is required.

I was under the impression that if you are doing an adjustment by refile, you DO need a new T183 regardless. Am I wrong?

Youi are. If the change is less than $300, the earlier T183 is considered to apply to the refiled return as well.

Not sure about T1 adjustments, but just for practical reasons:

  • You print out the T1 and meet with a client
  • They sign the T183 and leave
  • You notice some small thing that should be changed, or they call you and say, “Oh, I forgot to give you this donation receipt…” etc
  • You make the change in the T1, and the difference payable/refundable is minor

Do you really need the client to come back and sign a new T183? CRA recognizes it’s not material - if they ask you for the T183, and there is a discrepancy of less than $300, they won’t shut you down.
