I was blind sided today attempting to upload a T2201 on Rep Client portal.
Response was … no longer available after 14 Jul2026 in REP Client.
CRA acceptance now restricted to mail in or MyAccount (personal) initial followed up by practitioner documentation by online electronic form.
Talk about making the process more difficult for taxpayers, particularly PSTD, mentally challenged and those who simply don’t understand the whole concept.
It doesn’t make sense! Did CRA even talk with the medical profession on this…probably not. This is going to be so confusing for everyone and what Doctor is going to sit there and try to navigate CRA’s online application when they have a lineup of patients. This was a big mistake on CRA’s part. I feel for anyone with a disability.
This change was announced Jun 16 as soon as personal tax season ended (and we received email from CRA of the change). You can assist clients with the digital application by using the toll free number; getting the reference number (can verify the correct number via RAC; and then the individual can give the reference number to their doctor or medical professional; more doctors are already processing notes digitally so I expect many health professionals will be able to process part B of the application online. Yes, can still be done 100% on paper, but only mailed to CRA. I suspect CRA is going this route because of the poor penmanship of the doctors (the info is very difficult to read). In our small community, I will now give the doctor’s office a cover sheet explaining the digital procedure and the reference number and they can complete online for their patient. I can follow up via RAC to see when the doctor has completed part B.
I’ve had to explain this new procedure to a few clients since the 14th. On the plus side, I hope the online version will guide the clients through the first couple pages to make sure they fill out the ID and authorization part correctly. I actually had a client in the other day who said she filled out part of the T2201 in the doctor’s area, on the advice of the doctor! The online version should help prevent this type of stupidity.
On the downside, CRA of course touts this as an easier way to track the progress. Their T1 progress tracker is not exactly a smashing success but I can see that a “progress” checker is a difficult concept for CRA to grasp.
I was really hoping that with this change they might also have tweaked their “new digital process” so we could generate the code for those clients who aren’t online…
You can assist clients in getting the reference number by doing the part A application by phone; that is how we are helping our clients (and recommend you check via RAC the correct reference number; they state the numbers and letters, but do not advise if it is B or D or P or T, I have been wrong a few times in guessing what they said, and then check via RAC what it is)
You’d think they’d use standard descriptors (or have an option to press “2” to get them eg), but of course the programmers all have perfect hearing and never think of that…
agreed; they should use the military alphabet so we know what letters they are saying; ok for us that have access to their CRA account info since we can verify, but for individuals doing it themselves, will be frustrating if they give the wrong reference code to their doctor.
Yes, we can and have applied on behalf of the client by phone; provide them or their medical professional the reference number so the doctor/medical professional can complete Part B online
Just like the New CRA client authorization process, I think that many firms will encounter situations where clients do not know how to use a computer or how to use a cell phone to create or access their CRA account…and again, some firms will be faced with new procedures that are too time consuming and inefficient…especially during a busy Tax Season…How can they call this “Help speed up your DTC application”. How much will medical practitioners charge for this new service…Not easy to have to constantly navigate through the many curves thrown to us by CRA.
I know that for the New Auth process, some firms reduced or even halted taking on new clients during tax season. It became too time-consuming to explain and navigate the new protocols during the busiest time of the year. Client onboarding should not be so onerous.
Change is a real PITA sometimes but the option of having it done in pen and ink and sending the form to CRA is still available. I’m not sure how the medical professionals (normally doctors) will embrace this but over time it should become the norm. My feeling is that CRA’s ability to handle new electronic systems is dubious at best. They can’t even update their “progress tracker”.
It would be great if they added both spouses as eligible to claim the credit for a child/dependant and added the request for over the standard backpay limit for CCB as well.
For those that are in the Efile Association of Canada (EFAC)…these are all points above that should be made in the Annual Survey, currently in progress. CRA won’t change from seeing posts on a forum, but if CPA, other professional associations and groups like EFAC get sufficient feedback and/or complaints…those will be made to the wonks at CRA for response. It might not get us where we want to be, but it will be better than this.
MAKE NOISE! (And join EFAC if you aren’t already a member.)
This could have been a half decent idea IF they allowed an authorized representative to click on the “apply now” button within the DTC section of Represent a Client, but unfortunately that option doesn’t exist. Only the disabled client can do that online.
Of course, it seems completely logical the most severely disabled clients should be able to rush out and apply for a CRA My Account. I’m sure that is high on the priority list.
So the options now are essentially to have the client complete their portion online or over the phone and hope their medical practitioner is happy completing part B using a reference number, or to complete the form on paper and mail it in… at a time when the CRA is trying their best to get away from paper mail. Seems about right.
I guess the client COULD designate the preparer as their “legal representative” (unfortunately, of course, that involves even worse stuff to deal with), or, when doing the Auth you choose Level 3 and explain why.
