SIN #'s on day care receipts -

Issuing daycare receipts with SIN # seems to be risky. I worry about privacy laws. I know for tax returns they want sin # but i feel put full name is sufficient unless CRA asks.
Any opinions on this…
thank you

Is it any more risky than having your client’s SIN or other details? You are required to protect all that information. Are you worried that when you file a client’s tax return, CRA may divulge that information with other parties? Are you worried that the EFILE process is not secure, and that nefarious agents may intercept and decode that information without your knowledge?

I can’t see how the SIN of your client’s day care provider is at any more risk than the rest of your client info. CRA requires the taxpayer to obtain receipts from the provider which include the provider’s SIN or business name. If the provider is worried that their customer might not protect their sensitive info, that should be a discussion between the provider and their customer.

Or, are you saying we should all boycott CRA’s requirement, or ask CRA to change their administrative procedure, so that they allow providers to give receipts without any identifying info?

Anyone know if the SIN is sent to CRA as part of the submission?

I am fairly confident it is. This is a means of checking up on one of those home businesses that are apt to underreport income.

The child care providers SIN does not get transmitted to the CRA. The only information the CRA receive relating to the entire T778 form is the total claim on line 21400. They do not receive any information relating to the children (name, date of birth etc), the amounts allocated to each child, number of weeks at camp, or even the name of the childcare provider.

This information needs to be available if selected for review.

Hi
i ensure all information i deal with is protected, encrypted etc.
some of my clients indicated that they didn’t want their sin # going to parent of kids because they may not keep safe. they don’t want their sin # out there unnecessarily because of privacy risk

Your client needs to register her home daycare and get an institution number. It is either the SIN or the institution #. Or at least that is how it works in my province where daycare is subsidized and provincial government refunds back a substantial amount of an entitled parent for a child’s daycare expense.
