CRA review timelines

Anybody have an idea of how long the lag time is between filing/getting a pre-assessment review code and CRA actually asking for the info? I’ve got a client who’s very simple (1 T4 slip) 21,22&23 were filed mid April. 2021 was assessed but others still in limbo…

It’s a crapshoot for them. Could be 30 days, could be months.

While it is a crapshoot, this is a pre-assessment review.

If they take more than 30 days from the date of filing (assuming that the return was filed in June,) they then have to pay interest on the refund. That calculation will slow down the process, but equally it encourages them to process the pre-assessment review faster.

Last year I had a client subject to a pre-assessment review that didn’t get issued until August '23. Simple medical expense review where the couple lived in long-term care. I called a few times after May and CRA was indignant that I was rushing them. They told me not to call back until September since that’s how long their “service standard” gave them. Result was no change but a real head-scratcher as to why something so simple took so long.

Wow, I have always associated August with POST assessment reviews…I guess I need to review just how low they’ve set the bar for service standards before I call.

I don’t think CRA set the bar too low, I think they lost it altogether!!

I’ve got 5 preassessments on my desk currently, all of them over 30 days for a letter. I’ve had some in process for almost 2 years with calls over and over to CRA as to what they are doing, no answers.

Gotta love CRA. Rules for thee, not for me. We have 30 days to respond to things, they get to take however long they want to process them.

I have been filing service complaints if things go beyond the service standards. It usually gets the ball rolling.

For some of my Pre’s, I have a target date on the progress tracker (some, not all). I have someone with an eligible dependant pre, Efiled in April, submitted info in May. Their target date is DECEMBER. No Canada Carbon Rebate, and here’s to hoping he will get his CCB. It’s ridiculous!
