If we are talking just the TaxCycle subscription I am at around 1% of sales. So although I sent TaxCycle quite a bit of money still is worth it. I am also in on the founders pricing.
software was 525, sales 3750 14%
taxcycle is better than all others out there. before 2012, i used profile
If you think about it, if tax preparation is your business you need tax software. TaxCycle is very good, Profile is similar price I think, TaxPrep is more expensive, and Cantax is cheaper but inferior.
If the cost seems too much the only options are to reduce the cost, but there are not many options that can do that (except maybe a pencil) or increase revenue, not necessarily by charging more but also doing more.
When I talk about these things with clients I suggest focusing on revenue instead of costs.
Focusing on revenues vs costs is hard to do when you’re a solo practitioner working towards retiring. Although I don’t do the kind of volumes I used to…my costs have increased, while my revenue has decreased by … well a hell of a lot. But TC and Sage and all the rest (Telus, Bell, CRA…) just keep upping the base costs.

Craptax 575
They need to offer lower fees for sole practitioners.
That’s how Wolters Kluwer (taxprep) did things when I was there. If the accounting practice/firm was larger (multiple accountants working) they pay more.
The more revenue the less material the cost and vice versa.
Also, if you have been around for awhile (few years) your rates should be lower than someone who is brand new to taxcycle.
Does it make sense to charge a client who has been with you for years the same as a brand new client? I think a client who has been with you for many years deserves preferred pricing.
I’m about the same as @jimt:
TaxCycle cost is about 1% of my overall revenue. If you consider only the “tax portion” of the revenue, maybe it’s 2-3%. And I don’t think I am on “founders” pricing…that I know of. I started using TaxCycle in 2017, so that’s a few years after they started.
what made you switch
healthy - i’ve been with t/c since the first year 2012
My cost for TaxCycle is .02 of a percent. I do really a lot of T1’s along with a few T3’s and a pretty good amount of T2’s. So TaxCycle cost is absolutely OK.
Oops1 that should be 2%
I was using this community and getting help from people like you (I appreciate that and thank you). After awhile I decided to purchase the software when I heard it was just as good if not better than taxprep. In my opinion, taxcycle is better than taxprep having used both.
Phone/tech support is superb with both companies. This is what had me worried initially when considering the switch. However, the support is amazing with taxcycle and that’s what has kept me here. If the phone/tech support wasn’t good I would have gone back to taxprep.
However, the price increase around 10% from last year is a little high it should be 5%.
I think taxcycle should send a promo code / discount code to all its users who were here prior to the Xero acquisition.
I just think it makes no sense to charge loyal customers who have been around for years the same rate as a brand new customer.
I’ve been with TaxCycle since 2013. I received a postcard ad in the mail for the 2013 tax season and decided to check it out. After some back and forth with Marc and Cameron on some issues I initially had, I trialed the software and have been hooked ever since.
Unfortunately I missed out on the Founders pricing, I don’t think the software was being marketed on the East Coast in 2012 so I think the only ones that got an opportunity at Founders pricing was those in Alberta and maybe some neighboring provinces.
I still feel there is value with TaxCycle at the current price offering, but I am concerned with how this will roll out in future years as pricing increases seem to now be the norm.
I do like @healthymanccc idea of a loyalty promo code for those that were with TaxCycle for many years and for those that were there before the Xero acquisition.
yeah that would work for me healthymanccc
Just got my auto-renew email. Price has gone from $1,825 to $2,050. 12.3% in one year. For the full pkg. Buying the cheapest pkg plus the optional modules I need is even more expensive. Just another kick in the balls.
