Claiming Disability Tax Credit from dependent

So on Tax Cycle, when I put claim the disability amount from dependent, it is strange that the DTC will show on both of their return!?? So it shows on line 31600 of the dependent the whole amount for 223 which is $9428 and it also shows on the Tax Payer’s return on line 31800 the whole amount $9428

I think just one person could claim this amount or at least portion of this amount if the dependent has income and can utilize it…

If the deduction is not being used by the dependant, it can be transferred to the parent on the S5:

I put yes in the dependent worksheet to claim the disability amount of the dependent, but it still shows the disability credits on the dependent and the the dependent’s wife as well even though both of them have zero income

Isnt it strange that the disability amount appear on all of their T1?

This seems like a unique situation. I’ve never heard of a person who has a spouse and still depends on their PARENT to look after them. I wouldn’t have thought that all 3 individuals could be grouped together in a single TaxCycle file, unless the child’s spouse is dependant on the main taxpayer - as if the taxpayer had 2 children who married each other. If it wasn’t for the existence of the child’s spouse, I would say the rest looks normal (as expected).

No, actually the dependents are the parent. So the principal tax payer is the son who is married and taking care of his parents who also live under the same roof. The parents do not have income and are depended on the son for their daily needs. On top of that, the father has a disability certificate. So, I try to claim the disability + caregiver credit for the son. What I don’t understand is why does the disability credit appear on all of their T1? Shouldn’t just one of them (the son in this case) get it?

It has to be claimed by the parent first but then if the parent can’t use it (or all of it) TaxCycle should transfer it to the son if you’ve set the parents up as dependents of the son.

Check line 31800 for the son to see if there is an amount transferred from the parent.

You can see in my pictures above that the son did get the whole amount, but my question is why does the amount still show up on the father’s return (as disability self line 31600) and the mother’s return ( as spouse amount line 32600)

Or am I wrong to put the parents as dependents because the tax payer is married and not single? Does that matter? I thought that has to do with eligible dependent credits only.

Thanks for clarifying re: who the dependents are. Per your screenshots, the only one who is “getting” the deduction is the son. You have to look at the actual tax forms - in this case, the taxpayer’s S5 - not just TaxCycle’s Summaries. The summaries are just informational. They show that one dependent has a DTC “available”, not necessarily “being used”. By default, if a married person has a DTC, the disability amount can be transferred to the spouse via S2 - so it shows as “available” to the spouse as well. Again, not “being used” by the spouse.

I think you are right, but when I put $50,000 as income for the mother, both of them utilize the disability amount!? I believe that the spouse has the priority in this case no? If her income is enough to consume this amount, she would get it before the son!? He should get Zero for the disability credits, no? Tax Cycle does not have a mechanic to prevent 2 people claiming the same amount I believe.
