# Caseware files – cloud, local, or Caseware Cloud?

Hello,
How are you saving your Caseware files?
Do you keep them in the cloud (Dropbox, Sync, SharePoint), on your local computer, in Caseware Cloud, or somewhere else?
I just want to know what has been working best for others.

I’m a sole practitioner and keep my files on my network. I have a good backup system in place, locally and remote.

We use SharePoint as our cloud server. Note that this setup doesn’t allow for multiple users in the Caseware file at the same time. It works great otherwise.

That’s how I’m set up too. I’m just trying to figure out how to access my CaseWare files seamlessly from both home and the office.

Only one person accesses the CaseWare file at a time. CaseWare says their files aren’t really designed for the cloud, though it does work. Do you compress the file each time it’s closed?

I use the AnyDesk app when I have to access data from home. I don’t work from home that much but when I need it, it works. It’s easy to handle the multiple monitors I use at the office, too.

That’s a good idea. I bought two or three CaseWare licenses per user because we often work from the office, home, or a client’s site. Suspending and transferring the license each time would be inconvenient.

Caseware’s statement that they are not designed for the cloud is why we can only be one user at the time.
Regarding compression, we do compress the files as a best practice… but that was well before, and irrespective of using Sharepoint. Having an uncompressed file invites issues with files being moved or deleted inadvertantly. Plus take a bunch more room to save.

I don’t double up on the licenses. I access Caseware on my office computer through the AnyDesk app.

I’ll need to check out AnyDesk @kevin.
I’m using Splashtop for remote access to office computer & server, which I find works really well, but I guess you really don’t know how well unless you have something to compare it to.

I’ve never heard of Splashtop, @snoplowguy. I looked at their website. They seem to have similar features. It took me a while to setup AnyDesk to my liking but I’m used to it now. Let me know what you think. I’m always open to better software choices.

I just had a conversation with a new IT person, as part of moving my server into the cloud. He recommended using the CaseWare cloud (hybrid) even if everything else is on another cloud platform. And since it’s included in the desktop license now this is probably what we will do.

Thanks! I tested some files. A compressed file is easier to restore from cloud backups or version history because it is just one file. In the past, Before moving a file to long-term storage, we compressed the files.
